In fact, by mid-November this year,\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/news.crunchbase.com\/startups\/tech-layoffs-2022\/\"><span style=\"color: #ff7900;\">over 73,000 U.S. tech industry workers were laid off,<\/span><\/a>\u00a0with Amazon, Meta, and Twitter all slashing their headcount in recent days and weeks.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The numbers are even greater for those choosing to move to pastures new, as almost\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff7900;\"><a style=\"color: #ff7900;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/03\/09\/the-great-resignation-is-still-in-full-swing.html#:~:text=The%20elevated%20level%20in%20early,their%20jobs,%20an%20annual%20record.\">48 million people quit their jobs this year<\/a><\/span>, an all-time high, with a projected total of 20% of workers overall expected to do so by the end of the year. My friend, we\u2019ll call her A, is a\u00a0People &amp; Culture Manager at a medium sized international company. She\u2019s had to offboard a whopping 109 employees this year alone \u2014 a combination of lay-offs and resignations. Of course, every retreat from a company falls on the head of Your Friendly HR Manager to deliver the news or handle the exit.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cIt\u2019s obviously very hard to give someone the news that they\u2019re losing their job, but it\u2019s not necessarily easier to have someone quit either, especially if they are highly valued by the company, or very disgruntled,\u201d she confessed to me.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><style type=\"text\/css\">@media only screen and (max-width:1024px) {.fusion-title.fusion-title-3{margin-top:30px!important;margin-bottom:30px!important;}}@media only screen and (max-width:640px) {.fusion-title.fusion-title-3{margin-top:30px!important;margin-bottom:30px!important;}}<\/style><div class=\"fusion-title title fusion-title-3 fusion-sep-none fusion-title-text fusion-title-size-three\" style=\"margin-top:30px;margin-bottom:30px;\"><h3 class=\"title-heading-left\" style=\"margin:0;color:#1a1a18;\"><h3 class=\"title-heading-left fusion-responsive-typography-calculated\">HR as part therapist, part diplomat\u00a0<\/h3><\/h3><\/div><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-4\"><div class=\"fusion-text\">\n<div class=\"fusion-text\">\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A explained the conundrum very eloquently: \u201cOffboading is just as important as onboarding and, for HR, it requires a delicate balance of humility, diplomacy, empathy, and listening skills \u2014 all which need to be carefully adapted accordingly for the particular case and employee. Here,\u00a0<strong>compassion is key<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cOf course, sometimes there are performance or other quantifiable reasons, which are clearer to lay out as there will be a defined process leading up to this, but mass layoffs are brutal. Perhaps they have grievances with the company, their manager, or have been passed over for a promotion.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cDuring\u00a0my years in this line of work, I realized that the exit interview is the\u00a0<strong>final reckoning<\/strong>\u00a0for many employees who have decided to part ways with the company. Now is not the time to push back, challenge, or correct. Let them rip and get it all out, because it might be their first chance and only opportunity to finally speak their mind without fear of blowback.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This is where the\u00a0<strong>diplomat-slash-therapist hat<\/strong>\u00a0comes into play, as it\u2019s important to validate by listening rather than challenge and question, not least because a lack of listening at this stage could mean the views find their way onto public job rating platforms, such as Glassdoor.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\" data-contrast=\"none\">As A put it, \u201cI try to listen and make people feel heard. Now is not the time to argue the party line or make excuses.
